AI is redefining accuracy in echocardiographic assessment of cardiac structure. A study published in JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging compared AI-derived and expert manual measurements of LV mass using CT as the reference standard.

In 218 patients who underwent both imaging modalities, AI echocardiography outperformed expert assessment in precision and consistency. Using the hybrid wall-thickness method, AI achieved the closest correlation with CT (ICC 0.76) and significantly lower error rates. Diagnostic accuracy for detecting increased LV mass was higher with AI (area under the curve 0.84 vs 0.77 with expert evaluation).

AI also improved reproducibility, with test–retest variation below 8%. These findings support adopting AI echocardiography to enhance standardization and measurement precision in cardiac imaging.

Key highlights
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)–based echocardiography demonstrated higher accuracy and reproducibility for left ventricular (LV) mass assessment.
  • Agreement with computed tomography (CT) was strongest using a hybrid wall-thickness–based method (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] 0.76).
  • AI reduced measurement error by ~20% and reclassified 34% of abnormal wall-thickness cases.
