Is there any association between thiazolidinediones (TZDs) use in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with high risk of acute kidney injury and reduced mortality risk? A new large-scale analysis in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests that thiazolidinediones (TZDs) may provide protective benefits in this patient population.

Researchers analyzed data from the TriNetX platform, examining over 263,000 patients with both T2DM and AKD. Among them, 2,723 patients (1.03%) received TZDs within 90 days of their AKD diagnosis.

The median follow-up duration was 1.5 years. Patients on TZD reported significantly fewer adverse outcomes. Compared with non-users, they had a 32% lower risk of all-cause mortality, a 32% reduction in risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, and a 25% lower risk of major adverse kidney events.
