The paper, published in the Diabetology journal and provides information about the new ESYSTA® app, which can be an effective tool in diabetes management. Diabetes mellitus is a condition characterized by high blood sugar/ It can either be type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM: strongly linked to lifestyle and obesity) or type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM: an autoimmune disorder). Traditionally, T1DM and one-third of T2DM patients are treated using insulin therapy.
The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of ESYSTA® in blood sugar control. It is a retrospective re-analysis of the earlier START-I trial. The participants were divided into two groups: the Intervention group (IG: Patients from START-I who used ESYSTA®) and the Control group (CG: who received standard care (SoC) only).
There were three outcomes targeted. The primary outcome was indicated by the change in HbA1c after 12 months, secondary outcome was indicated by the change in HbA1c after 6 months. And the exploratory outcome consisted of the proportion of patients achieving HbA1c <7% or <6.5%.
The results showed that the IG group had a continuous and significant drop in the HbA1c levels. The reduction was better than the GC group. It was also reported that most patients continued using the ESYSTA® tool, over 2 years after the trial.
It also outperformed other tools for blood sugar management, and the effects were comparable to some oral medications. The effect is faster, observed within 3 months, and also sustained, lasting for over 2 months. The study indicated the strong effectiveness of this tool as a supplementary diabetes manager.
