Inflammation's Early Clue to GDM
Gestational diabetes stems partly from inflammation, yet studies stick to basics like CRP, IL6, and TNFα. Links between broad early-pregnancy cytokines and later GDM stay unclear. This work tests 20 markers and checks if race or weight alters ties. The study was published in the Diabetology.
Prospective Cohort Tracks Cytokines
Researchers studied 308 U.S. pregnant women with first-trimester plasma cytokines measured via MILLIPLEX panel. They pulled 1-hour 50g OGTT at mean 27.7 weeks (SD 2.9) and GDM diagnoses from records. Models used multivariable linear and logistic regression adjusted for socio-demographics. Interaction terms tested moderation by race and BMI.
IL6 Stands Out with Moderators
GDM struck 16 women (5.1%). Higher hs-IL6 tied to bigger 1h OGTT rise (b=3.76, 95% CI 0.21-7.32, p=0.04) and higher GDM odds (OR=2.36, 95% CI 1.17-4.77, p=0.02). Effect strengthened in Non-Hispanic White vs Black women (p interaction=0.03) and trended stronger in normal/underweight vs overweight/obese early pregnancy (p interaction=0.08).
Targeted Screening Takes Shape
First-trimester hs-IL6 flags glucose issues and GDM risk, with bigger impact in White and leaner women. Blood tests could spot high-risk cases early for prevention.

Key highlights
- 308 pregnant women had 20 first-trimester cytokines measured, with GDM in 5.1%.
- hs-IL6 associates with higher 1h 50g OGTT values (b=3.76, 95% CI 0.21-7.32, p=0.04).
- Elevated hs-IL6 raises GDM odds (OR 2.36, 95% CI 1.17-4.77, p=0.02).
- IL6-GDM link strengthens in Non-Hispanic White vs Black women (p interaction=0.03).
- Association trends stronger in normal/underweight vs overweight/obese early pregnancy (p=0.08).
