A recent study published in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders found that the triglyceride (TyG) index can predict the decline in kidney function in patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.
There is a greater risk of developing DKD in T2D patients. Even though the TyG index is considered a marker of insulin resistance, its role in the development of DKD in T2D is yet to be understood. The study aimed to examine the association of DKD progression in T2D and the TyG index.
Researchers included 428 T2D patients with and without DKD. The Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria were used to understand the progression of DKD. The researchesrs grouped the patients quartiles according to the TyG index. The correlation between the TyG index and metabolic indicators was analysed using Multiple regression.
Results revealed that 60% of the participants developed DKD. Compared to T2D patients without DKD, the TyG index was significantly higher in subjects with DKD, making it an independent risk factor for DKD. There was also an increase in triglyceride, uric acid, LDH, systolic blood pressure, creatinine, total cholesterol, glycated haemoglobin, urea level, albumin creatinine ratio, longer disease duration, higher age, and a lower eGFR in the DKD group.

Key highlights
  • The TyG index is a valuable marker for detecting diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D).
  • It may help in assessing the risk of renal function decline in individuals with DKD.
  • The study supports the clinical application of the TyG index as a non-invasive, accessible tool for early identification of kidney complications in T2D.
