Type 2 diabetes patients often struggle with daily care, high sugars, and low mood because usual classes skip mind skills and family help. A new study published in the Frontiers in Clinical Diabetes and Healthcare tests a better way based on Individual and Family Self-Management Theory (IFSMT).
The researchers ran a trial with 90 patients from local health centers, split random into two groups. One got a 12-week self-run program; the other stuck to normal diabetes lessons. They checked self-care parts like knowledge, beliefs, skills, and stress handling, plus HbA1c and life quality before and after.
Mind and Family Skills Fill Care Gaps
Usual education hits body facts hard but misses how thoughts, stress, and home support drive habits. IFSMT builds those for real change.
Big Jumps in Care and Life Scores
The program group soared in all self-care areas—P under 0.001. Life quality rose too at P under 0.01. HbA1c dropped a lot versus controls at P under 0.05.
Proof Self-Help Works Better Than Basics
Controls saw little shift, proving that the addition of self-rules and family ties had lasting gains.
