A recent study published in BMC Public Health highlighted the incidence and influence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Chinese population. The study aimed to determine the influence and incidence of T2DM.
Researchers selected 7048 individuals for the study. In 20 monitoring points, a follow-up was conducted based on the 2010 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factors Surveillance (CCDRFS). Using questionnaires, incident cases of DM were identified. Using physical measurements, questionnaires, and laboratory tests, influencing factors were collected. To analyze the influencing factors of DM, Cox regression models were used.
A total of 699 DM patients were diagnosed with a total follow-up of 40022.82 person/ year. The incidence was found to be 17.5/1000 persons. Risk factors for DM were found to be family history, hypertriglyceridemia, overweight and central obesity, sitting more than 6 hr, high LDL-C, hypertension, divorce/widowhood, age 45–59 years, and overweight (overweight with no central obesity). While overweight and central obesity were found to have a higher risk (HR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.34 ~ 1.97) compared to others.
