A recent study published in Journal of the American Medical Directors Association highlighted the pattern of prescription of anti diabetes drugs in older patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study aimed to determine the prescription pattern of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) in older patients.

A total of 103,820 patients were selected, and an observational retrospective study was conducted. Patients with T2DM for at least 3 months were selected.

During the period from 2017 to 2022, an increase in the use of SGLT2i was observed, rising from 7.3% to 27.4%, while the rise in GLP-1RA use, from 0.4% to 13.8%, was also noted. The use of metformin was found to be increased, while a decrease in the use of sulfonylureas was also observed. However, in women, lower use of SGLT2i was found. In younger patients, a greater increase in GLP-1RAs use was observed.
