Type 2 diabetes does more than raise blood glucose—it accelerates the accumulation of other chronic diseases. This study was presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Congress 2025

Analysis of 502,368 participants from the UK Biobank over a median 15.3-year follow-up revealed that individuals with type 2 diabetes had consistently higher transition rates between morbidity states. For example, moving from two to three chronic conditions occurred at 5.68 per 100 person-years in patients with type 2 diabetes versus 3.48 per 100 person-years without diabetes. Younger adults with type 2 diabetes experienced the most pronounced acceleration in disease accumulation.

These findings underscore type 2 diabetes as a critical driver of multimorbidity, particularly in early disease stages. Targeted early intervention in younger patients may reduce the risk of rapid chronic disease progression, improving long-term health outcomes and alleviating the burden of multimorbidity.

Key highlights
  • Type 2 diabetes increases the rate at which individuals accumulate additional chronic conditions compared to peers without diabetes.
  • The impact of type 2 diabetes on multimorbidity progression is strongest in early stages and among younger adults.
  • Early monitoring and intervention may slow the development of additional chronic diseases in type 2 diabetes patients.
