What is the glycemic index (GI)?
The glycemic index is a number that shows the rapidity with which a food raises your blood sugar. It assists in choosing foods that keep the blood sugar relatively more stable.

How is GI measured?
GI is measured on a 0 to 100 scale. It compares how a food increases blood sugar than pure glucose (100).

What are the GI ranges?
The low GI range is 55 or less, the medium GI range is 56–69, while the high GI range is 70 or above.

Why is GI important for people with diabetes?
Foods with low GI prevent blood sugar spikes. These foods improve blood sugar control and lower the risk of diabetes-related complications.

Do all foods have a GI?
Foods without carbohydrates, like meat, fish, oils, and spices, do not have a GI because they do not raise blood sugar.

What affects the GI of a food?
Several factors can affect GI. These factors are the ripeness of a fruit, the cooking method, the fiber content, and the degree of processing.

What is glycemic load (GL)?
GL considers both the GI and how much carbohydrate is in a serving. It gives a better idea of real impact of the food on blood sugar.

Can high GI foods raise health risks?
Eating too many high GI foods may enhance the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and weight gain.

What are examples of low GI foods?
Some of the examples of low GI foods are fruits (apples, oranges, berries), whole grains (quinoa, barley), vegetables (carrots, spinach, tomatoes), and legumes (chickpeas, lentils).

What are examples of high GI foods to limit?
Consumption of high GI foods should be limited. The high GI foods are white bread, white rice, mashed potatoes, French fries, sweets, soda, chips, instant cereals, and pastries.

Can the way food is cooked change its GI?
Boiling generally keeps GI low, while baking and roasting can raise GI by breaking down fiber.

Does ripeness affect GI?
Riper fruits generally have a higher GI as their sugars are easier to digest.

Is a low GI diet helpful for weight loss?
Some studies show that a low GI diet can help with short-term weight loss. More research is needed for long-term effects.

Can GI affect cholesterol or liver health?
A low GI diet may lower cholesterol and help reduce fat in the liver, particularly in people with fatty liver disease.

How do I follow a low GI diet?
Choose mostly low GI foods, avoid highly processed carbohydrates, and combine foods wisely, for example, pair carbohydrates with fiber or protein.

Can low GI foods still be unhealthy?
Some unhealthy foods, like chips, may have a lower GI but are still high in fat and salt.Choose based on overall nutrition, not GI alone.

How does GI affect post-meal (postprandial) blood sugar?
High GI foods raise your blood sugar quickly after meals, while low GI foods cause a slower, steadier rise.

What else should I look for besides GI?
Look at total carbohydrates, fiber, nutrients, calories, and portion size.GI is only one component to be evaluated in a healthy diet.

Why should I care about the GI if I don't have diabetes?
Even in individuals without diabetes, low GI eating can help prevent it, manage weight, and reduce the risk of heart disease.
